4. AI-Enabled Microbe Classification:
Powered by AI and the latest scientific research, the Urine Pathogenicity report enhances your and your healthcare provider’s insight into your condition as it algorithmically categorizes each microbe in your urine sample as:
C – Commensal: A microbe that plays a neutral or helpful role in the urinary microbiome.
P – Pathogen: A microbe that may be harming the urinary microbiome.
U – Unknown: A microbe whose impact on the urinary microbiome is unknown.
The Urine Pathogenicity Report is a consultation tool that gives doctors clarity into the scientific consensus on a particular microbe’s role, aiding in patient care decisions. It also serves as an educational tool to help people understand more about the infections they’re dealing with, and the huge role bacteria plays in our lives. These results serve as a helpful starting point for your doctor’s diagnostic and treatment processes. It’s important to note that your provider will make treatment decisions at their own discretion, considering your medical history. Moreover, the Urine Pathogenicity Report produces the best results for non-immunocompromised patients. Immuno-compromised patients will receive results that do not account for the effects of their specific conditions. Leverage MicroGenDX’s AI-enabled insights to enhance your patient experience and unlock the best possible treatment options.
5. Deeper Health Insights:
UroKEY can be paired with two additional add-ons to gain deeper clarity into your health, such as:
Urine Analysis Biomarkers:
This test add-on examines these crucial urine biomarkers to enhance the identification of pathogens:
– Leukocyte Esterase: Found in white blood cells, this enzyme indicates inflammation or infection in the urinary tract when present in urine. Detecting it enables UroKEY to identify infections that might otherwise go unnoticed by microbial analysis.
– pH Levels: Assessing the pH level of your urine reveals its acidity. Abnormal pH levels may indicate the presence of specific types of bacteria that thrive in certain pH environments, supporting the precise identification of the pathogens responsible for an infection or other urinary conditions. Moreover, monitoring pH levels can provide insight into your overall urinary health.
Full STI:
The full STI test is a separate PCR test that checks for the bacteria that cause:
Chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis)
Mycoplasma genital infection (Mycoplasma genitalium)
Gonorrhea (Neisseria gonorrhoeae)
Trichomoniasis / Trich (Trichomonas vaginalis)

Infections information
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) Test
What is a UTI?
A Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is an infection that can affect any part of your urinary system or tract, such as the kidneys, bladder, ureters (carries urine from the kidneys to the bladder), and urethra (directs urine out of the body). UTIs are classified as either “upper” or “lower” based on the infection’s location in the urinary tract. What are the Main UTI Types?
– Lower UTIs (Cystitis): The most common type, these infections happen in the bladder, causing inflammation known as cystitis. Lower UTIs can also affect the urethra and cause swelling called Urethritis. Symptoms include a frequent urge to urinate, pain or burning during urination, and cloudy or strong-smelling urine.
– Upper UTIs (Pyelonephritis): A more serious type of infection that affects the kidneys and/or ureters. Symptoms can include fever, chills, nausea, back/side pain, and vomiting.
Causes & Symptoms
These infections are usually caused by pathogenic bacteria or fungi. As lower UTIs are the most common UTI type, the most common symptoms are signs of bladder inflammation, such as:
– Bladder pain or discomfort
– Frequent or urgent need to urinate
– Pain or burning during urination
– Blood in the urine
– Consistent pelvic pain
– Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
Risks
Factors that increase the risk of contracting a UTI include:
– sexual activity
– certain forms of birth control
– menopause
– suppressed immune system
Why are UTIs more common in women? Although both men and women can get bladder infections, they are much more common in women. In fact, according to the federal Office of Women’s Health, women get UTIs up to 30 times more often than men. This discrepancy occurs because women have shorter urethras and their urinary tracts are closer to their vagina and rectum, making it easier for bacteria to enter.
Interstitial Cystitis (IC) Test
For those living with constant bladder pressure, a persistent urge to urinate, and relentless pain. This is the reality for those suffering from Interstitial Cystitis (IC), a chronic lower UTI condition also known as “bladder pain syndrome.” At any given moment In the United States, IC affects between 3 to 8 million women (almost the population of New York City) and up to 4 million men (the population of Los Angeles), making daily life a struggle for many in the US and many more abroad.
Causes & Symptoms
Despite its prevalence, the exact causes remain unknown, but likely stem from multiple factors. The symptoms of IC can fluctuate and may be worsened by stress or sexual activity, eating certain foods, or long periods of sitting. Symptoms include: Pelvic area pain ranging from dull ache to severe discomfort • Similar indicators to those of a UTI, such as
– Frequent or urgent need to urinate
– Bladder pain and discomfort
– Painful or burning urination
– Blood present in urine
– Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
Risks Factors that can increase the risk of developing IC include:
– family history of IC
– history of Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
– having other chronic pain disorders (e.g. fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome)
Diagnostic Difficulty As both UTIs and IC involve bladder inflammation and share similar symptoms, chronic UTIs can masquerade as IC, causing misdiagnoses. It’s also possible to have both at the same time, which can worsen symptoms. The overlap between these two conditions that require differing therapeutic approaches is a key reason why accurate testing is crucial. Cultures often struggle to identify the cause of IC or chronic UTIs, so more modern diagnostic tools are needed.
